OUR LAB
About Us
The Tropical Medicine & Diagnostics Development (TMDD) group is recognized as a leading research team in Nigeria, with specialized expertise in the development of immunoassays for the diagnosis of tropical parasitic infections. The group is actively engaged in profiling protein markers to advance diagnostic tools for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). This work is crucial, given the rudimentary state of diagnostics research and development in Africa, despite the continent’s significant burden of NTDs.
In addition to diagnostic development, our lab is extensively involved in evaluating the risk factors associated with the transmission of malaria and NTDs, including schistosomiasis, lymphatic filariasis, and soil-transmitted helminths. Our research includes investigating the immunomodulatory effects of malaria and helminth co-endemicity, as well as examining the impact of these diseases on oxidative stress and intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy (IPTp) in pregnant women.
Nanotechnology
Our research also extends to drug discovery, utilizing nanotechnology approaches to target parasites, vectors, and intermediate hosts. The TMDD group is open to collaborations with researchers, industry partners, government agencies, and NGOs to advance our shared goals in tropical medicine.
